The house is quiet. The kind of quiet that only exists when the kids are asleep, when no new messages arrive, when there are no excuses left.
Maya is stretched out on the couch, wrapped in a soft blanket, a bowl of ice cream resting on her chest as if it were a conscious choice rather than a complete surrender. Her eyes are half-closed, but her smile- fully awake.
Yehuda sits across from her, the remote in one hand, his gaze fixed far more on her than on the screen.
“You know,” he says without looking at her, “there’s something deeply unfair about the way you’re eating ice cream like that.”
Maya raises an eyebrow.“Unfair… to whom exactly?”
“To me,” he smiles, finally looking at her. “It’s distracting.”
She laughs softly, then deliberately takes another slow spoonful.“Your problem,” she whispers. “You’re the one who chose to sit there.”
